PARKING There is plenty of STREET PARKING on Walts and 37th. Please leave the driveway for residents.
Classes are in the GARAGE on 37th st. Bring dust mask, hair tie, & reading glasses if you need them, and your phone—for pictures! Please come ready to get your hands dirty. Dress to be comfortable for the weather, in clothes you might wear to summer camp, or a cookout… =]
SAFETY Always ask if you need more info on a new tool, chemical, technique, or anything. Common sense is needed at every station. Be Safe! In many classes we will use flame, chemicals, and tools that can be dangerous if not used properly.
I’m looking forward to meeting you! See you soon!
Call or text anytime: 605-376-9961 I may not see day-of texts until after class.
That’s code for watercolor t-shirts, my Community Ed class. The final class is tonight and there is still space! We are painting on panels that can be applied to t-shirts—or dish towels, pillows, jeans …
When designing this class my goal was to come up with a fabric painting technique that wasn’t stiff and raised. You will find this to be a more authentic watercolor experience with softness, subtlety, and blending. I hope you will enjoy it!
Imagine traveling to the land of Infinite Variety—South Dakota—to take a Basic Jewelry Metals Course at JOE’S Garage.
Learning the wires (rather than the ropes) is something best done in a progression. Each new skill systematically unveils new possibilities as the techniques build upon each other. The BJMC 8 month course, provides a comprehensive approach to basic jewelry fabrication at an easy pace…for those nearby. For those looking to take their creativity on the road, the BJMC is now possible as an intensive workshop.
Sherry from Tampa just completed PROJECT BJMC. The Project-based Basic Jewelry Metals Course compacts the foundational information into one week of instruction. The projects contain the skills needed to satisfy the requirements of the original BJMC, to the extent chosen by the student— striving to meet the artist’s vision and goals.
Sherry and I had the run of my Garage Studio, pushing the envelope of what could be and reimagining. I loved the ideas she wanted to try, and the beautiful pieces she left with!
The BJMC is offered in two 10-session terms for Sioux Falls local folk. Here is the schedule from 2024.
The JOE’S Garage plan goes over everything from wires and pliers, to jigs, rolling mills, and stone setting! You can read more specifics on the BJMC HERE.
Sherry opted for a more focused PROJECT approach. She arrived with experience that earned her the Sherry F Soldering Technique Award =]. Sharing is always encouraged! Scroll down to see more of her creations.
The images above represent some of the projects possible with Project BJMC. Wire working, working with jigs, cold forging, dapping/doming, punching and gauging are just some of the techniques you will learn through project-based instruction, and be able to apply those skills to your future designs.
Sherry managed to create all day (6-hour per day option) and sample Sioux Falls’ downtown eateries each evening, when she wasn’t saving my grandsons from s’mores.
Above: My little vices, Aluminum multi-wrap with doming/punching/stamping, Sherry’s Show-n-tell of a wrap bracelet focal element of set gems, SUCCESS recognized for a week’s worth of accomplishments, creating bezel settings from scratch, Sherry soldering at a propane set-up, Heidi and Monica at OPEN STUDIO during OUTLANDER WEEK for JOE’S Garage students, production mode for Edge-set Rings, the ubiquitous Dr. Tim here laying pavers to complete a patio.
Thank you to Sherry for a wonderful week of metal and gem artistry.
On-set, we created the frosty technique of sprinkling salt on wet watercolor washes. Here is a close-up of what we did. The effect is always wonderfully dramatic! Use plenty of pigment in a wet wash for best results. Try this with other porous options like rice, or crinkled papers, similar to the video below, where we used plastic wrap.
I will be having a BAPTISM BY WATERCOLOR beginning watercolor class April 9 or 10, 2024 through Community Ed. See the listing HERE.
On April 16 or 17, 2024 I will have REAL H2O watercolor, a class to create lifelike images. Realism with watercolor is possible. Learn how to layer and control this medium for portraits, still life, and cartoons for full and believable depth. See the link to this Community Ed class HERE. (At the time of this writing the image and description are for Interpretive Oil Painting, another offering on Community Ed.)
All of my classes are taught at JOE’S Garage, details will come with your registration.
Welcome to Blizzard week. The cold has gotten the best of me. Our heat is working at about 20%. So, I’m sorry to say, until the cold spell breaks there will be no painting classes.
